Why does character matter?
“Character” is the wholeness in your life. It is the solid foundation on which a person’s life is based. Our character is who we really are.
The importance of character plays an essential role in all areas of our lives. Qualities of good character result in strong leadership. It is made up of character traits that determine how we respond to events and circumstances in our lives based on our core principles. The sum of virtues, values and traits equals good character.
Character traits include:
- Integrity – builds trust.
- Honesty – dependability and diligence – build your reputation.
- Loyalty – creates bonds with followers.
- Self-Sacrifice – allows you to stand beside your fellow workers and give up gain for the good of others.
- Accountability – proves the presence of character.
- Self-Control – displays the ability to make good decisions and earn the respect of others.
Why character matters in leadership
Character is a critical element and determines our success. Through our honesty, encouragement, and belief in the abilities of others, we serve as a person of leadership skills and inspiration.
Living our values promotes the role of our values in action. A leader is effective and respected and becomes known as a promise-keeper by holding to his word. A leader stands for quality by treating people fairly, with respect, and with high integrity. Leadership decisions and the results we achieve carry our character stamp of approval.
